Install Openfiler on virtual machine
Hello Folks,Today, I'm going to post about the How-To install Openfiler on a virtual machine.
Now Openfiler is an Open Source Network Attached Storage and Storage Area Network Solution. For more reference please refer to site: http://www.openfiler.com
Please find the setup details:
Openfiler version : 2.6.26.8-1.0.11.smp.pae.gcc3.4.x86.i686
Virtual Machine : running on VMware ESXi
Virtual machine IP : 10.237.158.95
Please make sure the CD/DVD or ISO is available on CD/DVR drive and its connected on power on and the first bootable device selected is CDROM.
1. If everything seems in place, once you power-on the machine, it would detect the ISO file and load the basic installation screen.
Press ENTER to proceed with the GUI based installation or type in "linux text", if you prefer text based installation.
I'm going to proceed with the GUI based installation and hence pressed "ENTER" key.
2. Next it would begin with the testing of media. You may skip this step by selecting "Skip" using TAB key and pressing OK.
3. Next it would launch the Graphical installer which ask certain question to customize the setup process like Disk, IP/Hostname, Time, Password etc. I clicked Next and proceeded with the installation
4. Select the correct keyboard configuration from the list as per your choice. I use U.S. English.
5. Next it asks about the Disk Management about the basic server installation. There are two choices
a. Automatically partition [This method creates the default LVM based partition]
b. Manually partition with Disk Druid [Customized partitioning method]
6. I have used the option (b) which allow me to customize the partition and its size as per my needs.
7. The default partition details using the option (b) is as show below.
8. I deleted all the default partitions and created according to our customization. You can delete the partition by first clicking it, i.e. /dev/sda1 and then click Delete button. Continue with the same and delete all the remaining partitions until you get to the screen as show below.
9. Next we would create three partitions
a. /boot - Primary partition - 100 MB
b. swap - SWAP partition - 1024 MB
c. / - Root partition - Remaining disk
10. At last you would have the partition details as show below
11. Click on Next and proceed with the installation. You may or may not get a warning message about Low Memory / Disk Data would be formatted now. In this case press Ok and proceed with installation.
12. Next in Network Configuration screen, you can customize the IP address and hostname for your server. I have set the DHCP mode for getting the IP address and set the hostname to "openfiler.localdomain". This may vary according to your needs and requirement.
13. In the Time Zone selection screen, select your timezone either from the Map show or through the long list. I selected my timezone: Asia/Calcutta
14. Next is the Root Password screen. Enter here the password for root user.
15. Next step is the final warning set from where you could not come back to initial step. Click Next to start the installation process or Back to change the settings again. I clicked Next.
16. It starts with the formatting of disks, dependency calculation and package installation.
17. If everything goes perfectly, openfiler would be installed and it would ask you to Reboot the server. Once after reboot, you would be show the screen as show below. [The IP address may vary]
18. Now try accessing the openfiler portal using the below details [as in my case]
URL : https://10.237.158.95:446
Username : openfiler
Password : password
After login you would see the below screen which shows the Openfiler System Information. It has details about the Hostname, IP address, Kernel version, Uptime, Load average, Processor information, Memory and File System information on this screen.
Next article states about the Management of ISCSI volumes and accessing them using ISCSI initiator on Windows machine.
